A Note from the Director.
First of all I want thank all of you for your week of volunteering. Due to problems I was dealing with on Friday, I was unable to get around to all the dens to hand out the patches to volunteers. I do have some available if you are wanting one and did not get one. I respect all who volunteered their time so these children can come out to enjoy this program we put together.
Many of the adults in scouting may not know that all district and council events are put on by volunteers that spend many hours to put on the programs so the boys can have fun. Safety is our number one concern and, therefore, some events take a lot of certified people on property to put on the event. You all saw that with our archery area, and we worked many hours between Monday through Wednesday to increase staff and equipment safely. The staff at shooting sports and the pool are well trained and very cautious when it comes to your children. These will definitely be areas in which we will need more certified staff trained before camp next year. So if you are interested in working these areas, let us know. We need more trained people to put on camp staff. It takes 42 adults just to staff the camp and 60 den leaders to handle the amount of cubs on camp. We had 276 cubs and 17 sister scouts in the program. That’s a lot of kids to take care of. The kids all had a wonderful time because you all volunteered (thanks)!
Next year is going to be Space Camp, June 16-20th. Mark your calendars because we need volunteers so we can increase the numbers of cubs we can take in. This year we had to cut off registration and not let in some cubs (I was heart broken). I never want to say no to a cub scout. This was the first year in 8 years that we had to turn away boys since I have been on staff at camp. So please get the word out so we can break records next year.
Scouters don’t have to have cubs on property to help on property. Many of the staff do not have young cubs, but do have Boy Scouts and/or were scouts themselves and know the programs. We are going to need more staff next year. So if you feel you have a talent, interest, program ideas, or craft ideas, contact Steve Palmieri.
So thank you doesn’t seem to be enough to say to you all. The cubs will remember this camp and the underlying lessons we gave them this week for a long time. I talked to a few kids this week and they learned a lot more than I thought they would.
Yours in Scouting
